The postpartum phase is a time for recovery, rest, and bonding with baby. In America, it's very common for mothers to hurry and zip through their postpartum without much rest. I wish this was something we could change.
My wish is for mothers to be able to adopt to more of a restorative outlook on postpartum. I think this is one element where mothers could lower instances of postpartum rage, anxiety, and depression.
Doing our best to support the postpartum mother is imperative. I've loved many family's, and I see a common theme, very few did not take full advantage of the postpartum care offered. They picked themselves back up and continued life as though rest didn't exist.
I prepare my mothers all the way back in pregnancy. I suggest that everything we do and work on in pregnancy is for the best postpartum.
Mindset
Our mindset is our number one asset. In home birth we continually see that if we do not take hold of our mindset, fear creeps in.
These scriptures remind us:
2 Corinthians 10:4-5 KJV
"4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;"
and
2 Timothy 7 KJV
"7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."
Practicing embracing fear and regulating it under God is the key.
Most fear comes from regret. So in pregnancy, if you've had a hospital birth previous to having your home birth there may be some regret lingering. Submit it under God. Then the next step is very important.
We need to start generating desire. God puts our desires into our hearts because He delights in us. That's why we were even created!
Thinking about how you'd like your postpartum to go is extremely beneficial. God wants us to think on all the good things.
Philippians 8 KJV
"8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."
Would you benefit from friends and family visiting?
Would you benefit from a list of supplements to help you heal?
Would you benefit from premade meals?
Would you benefit from extra hands assisting in the upkeep of your home?
and the list goes on!
Mind your mindset for postpartum begins in pregnancy. Being proactive is a super important component for ensuring that you are on the right track to recovery.
Supporting you physically
You will be very exhausted. You will not feel like yourself until you start to hit about 8 months postpartum. A shift will happen where you will start to get a tiny bit more of sleep and that will make you feel like a new woman.
If all else in your postpartum you were able to create postpartum meals for yourself this is a massive role in your healing.
Herbs, protein, bone broth and limiting sugar and processed foods is going to support your body while you go through these extensive changes in your body.
After the first few days to the few weeks you need foods that will rebuild your blood supply, milk supply, and support your immune system:
Think
Vitamin C
Red meats
Bone broth for healing
Peanut butter
Oats
Barley
Squash
coconut water
Sourdough bread (Home made)
Garlic
Oregano
Basil
Honey (Real, raw, get it from your local beekeeper)
Supplements are very useful. I do have a warning about using supplements. Getting the cheapest ones are not the best value. You are actually aiding in damage to your body by opting for a cheap variety of vitamins and supplements.
Fish oil is amazing for your body and for healing. Unfortunately, many companies are selling you rancid fish oil. YUCK! Find a fish oil product that combines an antioxidant. This pairing will help the fish oil from oxidizing. (A fancy word for rancid)
Postpartum supplements I suggest:
Fish oil
Milk thistle
Magnesium Citrate (For stool softening effect)
Motherwort
Vitamin D
Liquid B complex
Restoring Hormones
This phase is right after a few weeks of focusing on healing. You've got your milk supply in, you start to feel like you've gotten a handle of the new born phase. Give yourself time before you start worrying about restoring hormones.
Your body is already working on it. Getting prepared before pregnancy by eating healthy hearty foods was the start. If you weren't able to get to that point, then any place you start is going to be O.K.
So where ever you are starting, even if it is in the postpartum start by getting rid of processed foods.
The processed foods are in packaging that is plastic, may contain BPA and these two things together is not good for your hormones.
Start drinking fresh clean water that has been purified.
Get rid of your microwave, microwaving plastics is going to leach unhealthy toxins into your body. Plus, it denatures your foods.
Lowering your A1c and blood sugars is so important. If you've been living off of processed foods high in sugar or foods high in sugar even if they are natural then you are really messing with your hormones.
Higher protein! Think 150 grams per day. Focus on natural carbohydrates like potatoes, squash, avocado etc..
Other foods to support healthy balanced blood sugars would be tomatoes, lettuce, onion, garlic, hot peppers,
Supplements for restoring hormones:
Maca
Apple cider vinegar
Lemon
Milk thistle
Ashwagandha
There are so many different things that can help you restore your hormones, but the big heavy hitters are strength training and high protein diets.
